Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA)

SEDEX, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, is a non-profit membership organisation dedicated to driving ethical business practices in the supply chain. SMETA is designed to reduce duplication of effort in ethical trade auditing, benefitting retailers, consumer brands, and their suppliers. It was developed in response to member demand for an ethical audit report format that could more easily be shared.


Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA)

The programme was established as a pro-active response by the South African fruit industry under the mantle of Fruit South Africa to promote sound and ongoing improvement of ethical labour practices on South African fruit farms and pack houses. It is a holistic programme that identifies problems that may exist, usually by way of an independent third party audit and responds with appropriate support and interventions, including awareness-raising and relevant capacity-building programmes.

Intertek is also a Social Accountability 8000 certification body, accredited by Social Accountability International in 1999, and was the first external monitor to receive accreditation to the Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production Certification Program (WRAP). Additionally, Intertek is one of the largest providers of Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audits (SMETA). Intertek has also been accredited in multiple countries by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) program, Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) Monitoring System, ICS (Initiative Clause Sociale), and the International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI) Code of Business Practices. We are continually seeking accreditation under new and emerging industry standards across industries and around the globe.
